The Supreme Court, Trinity Western, #metoo, & Haman's Gallows

By: Jacob Reaume

Over the last few months we've learned that there will be a reckoning for sexual sin. Bill Cosby, once a respected role-model, is now a convicted sex offender. He was convicted for sex crimes of decades past, and decades ago it likely looked as if he'd get away with it. Harvey Weinstein, once a larger-than-life film producer, is now charged with rape. Months ago allegations over his alleged sexual improprieties prompted the #metoo movement which led to a purge of many other high-profile men in business, politics, and entertainment due to similar allegations. Larry Nassar, once a respected doctor, will spend the rest of his days in a Michigan prison. He molested little girls, and he thought he'd get away with it as his colleagues appear to have participated in years-long cover-up of his abuse. I could list dozens of more names, and each day that list grows longer. If we've learned anything it's that there will be an accounting for sin: "Be sure, your sin will find you out" (Numbers 32:23).

I say all that in the midst of a moment obsessed with sodomy. This is pride month. Local public schools celebrate sodomy by raising the rainbow flag over each of their schools for the month of June. The rainbow flag is the flag associated with the proliferation of homosexuality. The rainbow flag has been raised over a local police station. Downtown Kitchener had a pride festival last week where people gathered to celebrate their sexual diversity. In a few weeks politicians will march with almost-naked men performing lewd acts on Toronto's streets during the pride parade. Just today the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the rights to sodomize and be sodomized are more important than the rights of a Christian law school. In this moment, homosexuality is sacrosanct.

And it is a moment. It is a moment. It is a moment. It is a moment. And moments end. Eventually moments stop. When they stop, new moments begin.

That brings me back to the #metoo moment mentioned in the first paragraph. There was a moment when Bill Cosby thought he'd get away with it. There was a moment when Hollywood producers were expected to take advantage of young actresses. People knew about it. They joked about it. There was moment when people revered Larry Nassar. Those moments were all moments. Those men were sacrosanct. They were untouchable. But then came #metoo, and the sacrosanct quickly became anathema.

The same will happen to this gay moment. One day the politicians and the naked men they revel with at gay pride parades will have a new moment. The last few months of #metoo teach us at least two things. First, they teach us that moments change very quickly: within days, no within hours, the sacrosanct became anathema. Second, they teach that there will a reckoning for sexual sin. The untouchables will become pariahs. "Be sure your sin will find you out" (Numbers 32:23). There will be a reckoning.

The Book of Esther tells the story of Haman and Mordecai. Haman thought he had the king's favour, and he used the king's favour to plot the execution of Mordecai and the Jews. While Haman viciously laboured to build the gallows upon which Mordecai would hang, God secretly worked to vindicate His people. In an ironic twist of providence, Mordecai watched as Haman was hanged from those same gallows.

So a brief word to the Supreme Court of Canada and to the godless people who now seethe with joy at the destruction of a Christian Canada and the marginalization of the Christian people: what you sow, you will reap. But it's not too late to turn to Jesus Christ for mercy. Soon it will be.
Psalm 2
Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.”
4 He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.
5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath,
and terrify them in his fury, saying,
6 “As for me, I have set my King
on Zion, my holy hill.”
7 I will tell of the decree:
The Lord said to me, “You are my Son;
today I have begotten you.
8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You shall break[b] them with a rod of iron
and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.”
10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear,
and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
