Warning: This will be an uncomfortable read.  It is necessary to dispel the whitewashing of sodomy so common today. 

INTRODUCTION

Canada is in a bad place.  Almost two years of lockdowns are behind us.  People are losing their jobs for refusing vaccinations.  Truckers are prohibited from crossing the border, threatening to obstruct supply chains.  Small businesses are shuttered.  Quebec is under curfew.  New Brunswick is demanding churches close.  International travel is contingent upon medical status.  Surgeries are canceled.  Pastors have been arrested.  Families are divided.  There’s no end in sight for these measures enacted under the guise of saving us from a virus, and to date none of the measures have delivered on their objectives.

As if the government didn’t have better things to do amidst this crisis, Bill C-4¹ has been rushed into law.  Helping someone change his sexual orientation to heterosexual or accept his anatomic makeup could land you in prison for five years.  Sold as a way to protect people from abusive therapies involving electric shocks or something of the sorts, the bill is so vague that some legal experts warn it might even prohibit parents from talking through the basics of the birds and the bees with their children.  That is unless the birds and the bees talk coaxes the children to become homosexual or transgender, as such coaxing is not prohibited in the bill.  As the bill states,  a “practice, treatment, or services designed to change a person’s sexual orientation to heterosexual;” or “change a person’s gender expression so that it conforms to the sex assigned to the person at birth;” etc. is verboten.  This is an attempt to create a twisted fantasy world by federal law.  Most disgraceful, in my mind, is the bill’s preamble which condemns the biblical teaching on sexuality as “myth.”  The bill was rushed through both lower and upper chambers of Parliament without opposition, and it quickly received royal ascent on December 8, 2021.  All parties of the House of Commons celebrated with cheering, while members met at the center aisle to embrace after its passing.

THE VINE OF SODOM

Moses spoke of apostate nations in Deuteronomy 32.

For their vine comes from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of poison; their clusters are bitter; their wine is the poison of serpents and the cruel venom of asps (Deuteronomy 32:32—33).

Scripture compares Israel to a fruitful vine (Psalm 80:8).  Living faithfully under God’s covenant, God would cause Israel to produce life-giving fruit which results in Shalom, or peace and health for all.  The vine of Sodom looks like Israel in some ways, but it is not.  It is a counterfeit that rises to destroy it with poison grapes and bitter clusters.  It is apostasy.

That the vine is called “Sodom” is significant.  Sodom is the height of rebellion against God.  In Genesis 19, God rained burning sulfur on it and its neighbouring city Gomorrah.  Their crimes against God were legion, but their high point of decadence was sodomy (Jude 1:7), the sin appropriately named after the city.  Sodom is the quintessential biblical archetype of apostasy and divine wrath.  We are forever to reflect on that wicked city as an example of what not to become and what will become of us if we become Sodom.

Sodomy is never a stand-alone sin in the Bible.  It’s the climactic point of rebellion, and by the time it is celebrated legions of sins have already cut through the forest and worn down a path so that sodomy can march in with ease.  Ezekiel observed that Sodom’s sins included “pride,” haughtiness, “abominations,” and not aiding the “poor and needy” (Ezekiel16:47—50).  In Romans, Paul lists sodomy as the climax of human rebellion (Romans 1:18—27), but the sin itself is listed with a catalogue of other sins including “envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness,” gossip, slander, hatred of God, insolences, haughtiness, boastfulness, inventing evil, and being hateful of parents (Romans 1:1—31).  If you mix a bunch of sins up in a bowl to a batter and you place the batter in an oven to bake, sodomy is what you’ll get.  It’s not one sin among many, but it is the stewing of many sins in one cauldron for a prolonged period of time.  It is a high watermark of rebellion, or, to be more accurate, the bottom-feeding of depravity.  Apostasy takes root, sprouts, grows, flowers, and then produces the fruit of sodomy.  Sodomy is the fruit of the germination, fertilization, budding, blossoming, and flowering of apostasy.  The “vine of Sodom” produces “grapes of poison” (Deuteronomy 32:32)

That Moses calls Sodom a vine is significant.  Vines grow and grow and don’t stop growing.  They’re invasive and take all of life.  They’ll fill gardens, cover houses, and overtake trees.  Wild vines will often grow to kill all other vegetation.  That’s precisely what the vine of Sodom does.  The Kingdom of God, as it is nourished by Christ, is likewise a vine that is to spread across the globe (John 15:1—17).  But its fruits bring healing, love, and joy, Shalom.  The vine of Sodom brings death and produces the “poison of asps” (Deuteronomy 32:32).  The lesson is that where apostasy is left to grow, it will grow.  It takes over, and the grapes of Gomorrah will be its harvest.  Those grapes bite like a snake with the venom of a cobra.

St Peter Damian (1007—1072 AD) fought moral corruption, especially homosexuality, in the Church.  He said,

For their vine is from the vineyard of the Sodomites, and their offshoots are from Gomorrah. “Their grapes are grapes of gall, and their clusters most bitter.”  For this serpent which we labor to crush with the stake of our argument, has four heads, and he injects all of the poison of his wickedness with the tooth of whichever head has bitten.²

Because the sin itself is so ugly, it warrants an ugly word as its label.  While the word “homosexuality” is a benign description of a deadly existence, the older terms like “sodomite” or “buggery” are more apropos.  The behaviour is so vile that it should be stamped with words that make us cringe.  The Bible presents it as shameful and cringe-worthy, and our vocabulary should mirror that.  Tim Bayly helpfully observes,

In past centuries, Christians recoiled in horror at even glancing references to men having sex with other men.  Men who lay with males were called “sodomites” because this name helped everyone feel the heat and smell the sulfur of that terrible day when God consumed the wicked men of Sodom.³

He continues by explaining our present vocabulary,

Homosexuals were determined to remove sodomy’s shame, and their methods weren’t subtle… They have been so successful that, today, pastors and church leaders prattle on about “gay Christians,” “spiritual friendship,” and “homosexual orientation.”  Christians no longer speak of “sodomy,” but merely “alternative lifestyles,” and we have arrived at the point that the language of the world and the language of Christians is almost indistinguishable.⁴

He is right.  Our language ought to strike the biblical tone.  Moses, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, along with Paul, described sodomy as the height of apostasy.  It is the name of a cocktail of sins, all mixed together.  It’s aggressive.  It’s insatiable.⁵  It’s deadly.  Our choice of words should communicate as much.

THE GRAPES OF GOMORRAH

God wrote the Bible, and He also created the world.  So the Bible is congruent with what we see in the world.  Such is the case with sodomy.  The Bible presents it as the vile high point of moral decadence, and the observable data agrees.  Robert A. J. Gagnon, in The Bible and Homosexual Practice, points to study after study, each with compounding evidence that yes indeed Gomorrah’s grapes are poison.

Gay men have a 25 to 30 year decrease in life expectancy.  They often have fatal rectal cancer, “multiple bowel” diseases, and a “much higher than usual incidence of suicide.”⁶  Common among homosexuals, and in order of prevalence, are viral infections of “amebiasis (inflammation of the rectum and colon), giardiasis, gonorrhea, shigellosis, chlamydia, syphilis, and ectoparasites,” and the non-viral infections of “condylomata (anal warts linked to anal cancer), herpes, and hepatitis B and A.”⁷  From 1981 through the end of 1999, homosexuals accounted for about 2% of the American population, but “accounted for about 60% of all adult/adolescent AIDS cases and 84% of those due to sexual activity.”⁸  They also “experience significantly higher rates of alcohol and drug abuse, major depression, and thoughts of suicide and suicide attempts.”⁹

Beyond the studies listed by Gagnon, a random test was completed in major American centres which found that 19% of gay men have HIV, and 63% of those with HIV between 18—29 years old didn’t know they had HIV.¹⁰  Despite being a small minority of the population, 56% of all people living with HIV in the United States in 2019 were sodomites.¹¹.

The Center for Disease control in the United States recently documented,

The United States is experiencing person-to-person outbreaks of hepatitis A in unprecedented numbers during the vaccine era. As of May 2020, 33 states had reported hepatitis A outbreaks involving approximately 32,500 cases, 19,800 (61%) hospitalizations, and 320 deaths since 2016. These infections are spreading primarily through close contact among persons who use drugs and persons experiencing homelessness, as well as among men who have sex with men (MSM).¹²

Outbreaks of hepatitis A — unprecedentedly on the rise — has sodomites as one of their three primary sources.¹³  You might take personal solace noting that it is isolated to just a few groups of people.  Think twice.  A January 5, 2022, article in Food Safety News has linked the spread of Hepatitis A to an outbreak at an Italian restaurant in Pennsylvania potentially causing death and hospitalization:

State officials are reporting a hepatitis A outbreak among patrons of an unnamed Italian restaurant in Pennsylvania. One death is being investigated as part of the outbreak.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Montgomery County Office of Public Health are investigating the outbreak in southeast Pennsylvania.

Health officials report that there are eight confirmed patients among Pennsylvania residents in Montgomery County. Of seven people with information available, six have been so sick they had to be admitted to hospitals.¹⁴

The article notes the seriousness of the disease:

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious, vaccine-preventable, liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus ranging in severity from mild infection lasting a few weeks to severe disease lasting several months, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.¹⁵

It can be spread when a carrier contaminates food and another person ingests the food, hence the concerns about the potential outbreak at the Italian restaurant:

The virus usually spreads when a person unknowingly ingests microscopic amounts of it from objects, food or drinks contaminated by an infected person.¹⁶

It is possible then that an infected person who works at a restaurant transfers the disease through food to clients.  That the disease is spreading among sodomites means it could spread from that group to other groups through, for example, food contamination at restaurants.

Moving back to the data provided by Robert Gagnon, the sodomite existence is characterized by the insatiable consumption of illicit sex.  A 1970 study in San Francisco found that 84% of White homosexual men and 77% of Black homosexual men had over 50 sexual partners in their lives, while 28% of White homosexual men and 19% of Black homosexual men had had over 1,000 sex partners.  A 1987 study found that 69%—83% of gay men had more than 50 sex partners.  A 1997 study of Australians found that 57% had more than 30 partners and 35% had over 1,000 sex partners.¹⁷  Keep in mind that sodomy is fruitless, as it produces absolutely nothing, but as noted above it spreads disease and death.  “Their wine is the poison of serpents and the cruel venom of asps” (Deuteronomy 32:33).

I personally recently spoke with a retired nurse who once cared for sodomite AIDS patients in a hospital.  She, almost moved to tears, lamented that children are being taught that sodomy is an acceptable practice.  She remembered the many young men who she cared for as they died.  Often she had to change their diapers because being sodomized destroyed their anuses and made them incontinent.  She told me of a surgeon who stopped performing anal surgery because he was so disgusted by the number of young sodomites who had destroyed their anuses.  She wanted to make this known to warn young people of the destructive nature of this behaviour.  In one way, this is my attempt to honour her request.

A harm to themselves, yes, but they are also statistically more likely to molest children according to a 1985 report which surveyed 19 separate studies and is kept on the US Department of Justice website.  The abstract reads,

Those who practice homosexual acts are at least 12 times more apt to molest a child sexually, and with suitable corrections for bisexuals (who molest both genders), probably at least 16 times more apt to molest a child… It appears that teachers who practice homosexual acts are between 90 to 100 times more apt to involve themselves sexually with pupils than teachers who confine themselves to heterosexual acts.¹⁸

Under Premier Kathleen Wynne, herself a lesbian, the Province of Ontario introduced a new sex education curriculum.  The curriculum mainstreamed queer theory among young children, while normalizing sodomy, masturbation, and transgenderism.  Given the above study on the US Department of Justice website, we should not be surprised to learn that the curriculum was originally designed under the direction of Premier Kathleen Wynne’s Deputy Education Minister, Benjamin Levin, who is a convicted child pornographer.¹⁹

Just this week, a local teacher addressed the Waterloo Region District School Board with concerns about books in the libraries of Waterloo Region public schools, available to K—6 students.  She noted a book that encourages young boys to think about naked girls, while the same book presents a boy who thinks he’s odd because he doesn’t think about naked girls, so he declares himself asexual.  The concerned teacher then alleged that “some of the books filling the libraries make it seem simple or even cool to take puberty blockers and opposite sex hormones.”  She posted a page in the book to substantiate her claim, at which point the chairman interrupted her and eventually removed her from the meeting.  He accused her of violating a provincial human rights code.²⁰  Apparently, sexualizing children and normalizing the destruction of healthy adolescent bodies is just fine for the Waterloo Region District School Board, but criticizing the perversion and the abuse is a human rights violation.

Speaking of sadistic medical procedures, a 2011 Swedish study observed that 10—15 years after mutilating themselves with so-called “gender reassignment surgery” people have a suicide rate 20 times higher than comparable peers.²¹  Of course, chopping off perfectly healthy sex organs and replacing them with man-made imitations, while taking hormones, does not change a person’s sex anymore than a Halloween costume transforms someone into Superman or a Disney princess or a goblin.  It’s make-belief, only at a very high and painful cost.

Yet, despite its evident harmfulness, all of this is celebrated in Ontario.  Now, during Gay Pride month (June) in Ontario, all public and Catholic schools, along with all police stations and government buildings fly the pride flag, with all banks and many corporations also joining in.  Toronto, once known as “Toronto the good,” because of its distinctly Protestant culture, is now Toronto the gay.

The vine of Sodom is all-consuming, insatiable, and it offers nothing positive, other than some momentary pleasure for darkened minds.²²  The Bible says as much, and that’s consistent with what we observe.

TRUDEAUMANIA TO SODOMANIA

If you could chart the normalization of sodomy alongside the rise of socialism, the breaking down of social trust, the decay of morals, the disintegration of the family, and the repudiation of Christianity, they would all likely chart similar courses.

There is no reason to debate the assertion that Canada was founded on Christian principles.  Historian Mark Noll notes that Canada in “the mid-twentieth century” had “a much stronger claim as a ‘Christian nation’ than its large neighbor to the south.”²³  In 1881, Ontario was about 17% Roman Catholic, and 98% of non-Catholic Ontarians attended either a Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist, or Anglican church.²⁴  My paternal grandparents, of the WWII generation, were raised in Toronto.  I remember them telling me that in their youth they didn’t need to lock their house doors at night.  It was a peaceful and overwhelmingly Christian Canada.  Vestiges of this Christian past even still remain enshrined in Canadian law.  For example, section 264.1.c of the Ontario Education Act lists that one of the duties of a public school teacher is

to inculcate by precept and example respect for religion and the principles of Judaeo-Christian morality and the highest regard for truth, justice, loyalty, love of country, humanity, benevolence, sobriety, industry, frugality, purity, temperance and all other virtues.²⁵

Those days are long gone.  What happened?  By 1967, Canada was making an overtly intentional cultural shift away from Christianity.  Mark Noll explains,

A recent study by Gary Miedema has shown how at signal events in 1967 — celebrations of Canada’s centennial and Expo 67 at Montreal’s World Exposition — public symbols and rhetoric moved way from particulars of Canada’s religious and ethnic history toward a vision of universal multicultural toleration.²⁶

1967 led to 1968, which started with Trudeaumania, a term coined to describe the fanfare and enthusiasm which swept Pierre Elliot Trudeau into office as Canada’s 15th Prime Minister.  He remained in office until 1984, except for his brief stint as leader of the Opposition in 1979 and 1980.  Before his sweep into power, he famously quipped “There’s no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation,” in reference to a 1967 omnibus bill he, the Minister of Justice at the time, introduced which, among other things, decriminalized sodomy.²⁷  We should not let it escape us that the next year, on the trains of his successful crusade against criminalized sodomy, he rose to power as Prime Minister in a groundswell of enthusiasm known as Trudeaumania.

Trudeaumania was as much an indictment against Canadians as it was a sign that Canada was intentionally rejecting God’s Law, in a movement that should be described as national apostasy. No, we should not confuse Canada with ancient Israel, as they are as distinct on a theological basis as they are in many other ways.  But, what do you call a nation that intentionally repudiates its Christian morals and history?  “Apostate” seems as good a term as any.  Judgment for this generation of Canadians might even be worse than the judgment on Sodom (Matthew 10:15).

It took about two generations for Trudeaumanian to become sodomania.  In 2005, the federal government passed the Civil Marriage Act, rendering so-called “gay marriage” lawful.  In 2018, Trinity Western University lost in a Supreme Court ruling.  The Supreme Court of Canada ruled that Trinity Western does not have the right to establish an accredited law school so long as it requires its students to uphold a biblical view of marriage by way of a communal lifestyle covenant.  The ruling, in essence, rendered sodomy more sacrosanct than the school’s Christianity.  Now in 2022, under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, son of Pierre Trudeau, we have the enactment of Bill C-4 which, as mentioned above, prohibits attempts to convert homosexuals towards heterosexuality.  Many suspect that will include the criminalization of the preaching of the Gospel under the threat of a maximum 5 years imprisonment.

Not one politician opposed the bill, and it was supported by all political parties, even to the point of the Prime Minister and the leader of the Official Opposition rising for a celebratory embrace in the centre aisle of the House.  This, of course, was all in the middle of the COVID crisis, as media were reporting that the omicron variant might soon cripple our healthcare system.  That there was not more urgent matters for our political class to attend to, with the lockdowns and the shortage of hospital beds and all, likely speaks to the selfish nature of this particular sin.  And that they made it illegal to help people escape this sin —  a sin which is so obviously harmful to health and occupies so many medical resources, even while hospitals complain of strained resources amidst a so-called pandemic — likely reveals God’s judgment in blinding the politicians and population alike.   Sodomy has, to Canadians, become more tasteful than Jesus Christ.

The vine of Sodom is aggressive, and it intends to cover every aspect of our existence.  It almost has, at least in Canada.  It has entered the Church, with Bill C-4, and it’s threatening to choke the pulpit.  In reference to the decriminalization of sodomy, Pierre Trudeau quipped in 1967, “There’s no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation.”  He fertilized the vine, and, under his son, Justin Trudeau, the state in 2022 has its place in the churches and pulpits of the nation.

CONCLUSION: REPENTANCE NEEDED

Our government has been attacking our freedoms for almost two years with lockdown after lockdown, and now with various vaccine mandates.  Families are divided.  Businesses are shuttered.  Churches have often only met freely under the threat of prosecution.  Canadians, in general, have glassed-over eyes, many treating themselves with anti-depressants or toking their despair away in a skunky cloud of marijuana smoke, a substance decriminalized under Justin Trudeau.  The state has no place telling us what not to smoke — health risks of smoking aside—but it does tell us how to worship, because worship is dangerous to our health after all.  Energy is as low as the mood.  It’s not the country it was, and it’s by no measure better.  That is unless your measure of better is the uninhibited ability to sodomize or be sodomized.  With all this going on, the priority of government before Christmas was Bill C-4.  It wasn’t the needy families.  It wasn’t the shuttered business.  It wasn’t the abuses of actual human rights.  In a display of how abjectly selfish homosexuality is, politicians prioritized Bill C-4.

If we could chart the course between the normalization of sodomy and the disintegration of society I suspect the graphs would look eerily akin.

As I live, declares the LORD God, your sister Sodom and her daughter have not done as you and your daughter have done.  Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.  They were haughty and did an abomination before me.  So I removed them, when I saw it (Ezekiel 16:48—50).

Canada is in a bad place.  We desperately need repentance, and repentance will include asking God to forgive us for fertilizing the vine of Sodom.  It should really begin in the churches.  I doubt Bill C-4 will have negative legal implications for most so-called evangelical churches.  In fact, I guess that a good many pastors are more offended by the tone of this blog than they are by C-4.  They haven’t preached against sodomy for years, so why should they start now that it’s illegal?  Sure, they might say things like “God’s purpose for sexuality is the best way” or “God designed marriage for one man and one woman” — although that might even be a little extreme for some — but they won’t come out and say “homosexuals, without repentance, go to hell.”  Why?  Because many do their best to walk the tightrope of appearing orthodox on one hand without offending the cultural effete on the other hand.  It’s a balancing act.  Their definition of a faithful ministry is quoting the Bible every now and then, while doing everything they can to ensure that their God-hating neighbours don’t hate them.

With all the warnings about the “deadly health risks of COVID-19” resounding from Canadian churches, when was the last time you heard a church speak of the deadly health risks and social ills of sodomy?  Churches, after all, have cancelled the worship of Jesus Christ to save the world from COVID.  What have they done to deter people from sodomy?

But in the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a horrible thing: they commit adultery and walk in lies; they strengthen the hands of the evildoers, so that no one turns from his evil; all of them have become like Sodom to me, and its inhabitants like Gomorrah (Jeremiah 23:14).

The Gospel Coalition Canada, with other groups, including the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptists, asked pastors to publicly read a statement about Bill C-4 to their churches on January 7, 2022.  The statement was produced by the Canadian Religious Freedom Summit, and you can find it here.  After a bit about the bill itself, the theological essence of their statement reads:

Along with church leaders of like conviction across Canada, we stand before you today to pledge that we are committed to obeying God above all others (Acts 5:29). With the Lord’s help, we will continue to proclaim the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27) without fear or favour. This includes God’s life-giving design for human beings, made in His image, male and female (Genesis 1:27), with sexual intimacy reserved for the covenantal union of a man and a woman (Genesis 2:24). We will continue to issue the call to repent of all kinds of sin and to believe the gospel, knowing that we all have sinned (Romans 3:23), and that salvation through Jesus is the one true hope for the world (Acts 4:12).

You will note that nothing wrong is written in the statement.  In fact, there is some good.  The positive vision of God’s design is affirmed, and they promise to preach against sin.  My criticism pertains to what’s not there.  Committing to preach against sin in general without mentioning the specific sin at hand strikes me as a duck and dodge.  Clarity is virtuous.  The prophets of old did not stand up and say, “Thus saith the Lord, ‘We will preach against sin.'”  In fact many false prophets had a difficult time defining sin: They called “evil good and good evil” (Isaiah 5:20).  Specificity helps avoid that.  The true prophets actually named sins, and they often described them in graphic terms.  The above statement almost reads as if it was combed through by a lawyer to minimize legal liability.  It strikes me as an attempt to walk the tight-rope of maintaining doctrinal orthodoxy while doing everything possible not to offend the Laurentian consensus.  The actual sin must be named.  It must be condemned.  And those who participate in it must be offered free pardon in Christ if they repent.

We are reaping the grapes of Gomorrah from the vine of Sodom.  It took root a few generations ago, and now, with the vintage coming in, we’ll increasingly taste the bitterness of its poisoned wine.  The Lord is a merciful Christ.  But He demands that we see things as He does.  He didn’t blink at Trudeaumania after the decriminalization of sodomy in 1967, and he was surely repulsed by the first so-called gay wedding.  As more of those so-called weddings have been celebrated while the years have passed, He hasn’t become more accepting of them, as so many others have.  Rather, to His nostrils, they have only compounded the stench.  Sadly, our nostrils have adapted.

After witnessing the unopposed effort to pass Bill C-4 and the unified parliamentary celebration at its passing, I suspect God has completely abandoned our political leaders.  I personally believe Parliament — the House of Commons and the Senate — is God-forsaken.  “And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done” (Romans 1:28).  His blessings are leaving this country, and His presence is being removed.  We should feel the heat and smell the sulfur in the memories that Sodom evokes.  If things don’t change and if they don’t change quickly, the smoky smell of sulfur could soon replace the sinful stench of sodomy.

To further illustrate this point, I recommend Chuck & Donna McIlhenny and Frank York’s When the Wicked Seize a City (Authors Choice Press: New York, 2000).  It recounts the destruction of San Francisco by sodomite activists, as well as the McIlhenny’s horrifying persecution — which included the firebombing of their family home with children inside asleep — while Chuck McIlhenny served as an Orthodox Presbyterian pastor in San Francisco during 1980s.
